Efforts are now under way to hire the best people after massive layoffs in the technical field.

SAN JOSE, CA (KGO) — It is often said, “When one door closes, another opens.” And for the tens of thousands of tech workers hit by recent massive layoffs, experts say opportunities abound elsewhere. Efforts are being made to recruit the best technicians.

Google, Microsoft, Amazon and others make up the list of big tech companies that are leading the sector in terms of layoffs, continuing a series of layoffs that began last year.

Today, tens of thousands of technical workers are looking for new opportunities.

“This wealth of experience and knowledge, as well as up-to-date information, is very attractive,” says San Jose State University. This was stated by professor of engineering and technical expert Ahmed Banafa. “Very attractive.”

Banafa said efforts to capitalize on this growing pool of candidates are under way. The US Office of Personnel Management (OPM), the government’s recruiting agency, is on the waiting list.

“Stability is what you get when you work for the government,” Banafa said.

He elaborated: “I found that yes, the salary is not competitive compared to what you had. But you have stability, you have a union, you have protection, and you are guaranteed a promotion.”

ABC7 news reached out to OPM. Director Kiran Ahuja said in a statement: “If you are passionate about making our country a better place, then civil service is the place for you. The federal government works across all sectors and industries—whether your interests are cybersecurity or defense. , energy and transport, healthcare and banking – there are thousands of job openings available in the tech space.”

In mid-January, the office even launched a Federal Tech Portal that lists location, job title, starting salary, and other essential information to help you find a new job.

Elsewhere, Germany sees recent layoffs as the perfect time to hire top talent.

“They have an aging population, they have taken in a lot of refugees. They would like to make sure that their immigration is more acceptable for this, because this is theirs, this is their strength, ”said Banafa. “They have the strongest economy in Europe. So they will be the leader.”

Without a doubt, massive job cuts have caused suffering to many. Nevertheless, Banafa reminded that there are great opportunities behind the obstacles.

“A software engineer is still a software engineer, whether at Google or Ford or government. Come to think of it, if you’re good at what you’re doing, then you’re a winner in this situation.” he added. “Because now you have to choose the employer, not he you.”
