Does New York State have money that belongs to you? Here’s an easy way to find out

The state of New York is sitting on a lot of money, and some of it may belong to you.

The Office of the State Comptroller currently has $17.5 billion of unclaimed funds and they are trying to encourage people to find out if they are owed any of that money so they can hand it over.

Government officials say they have returned more than $26 million residents this year. Most claims are $100 or less, but there have been some very large payouts over the years, including $4 million in 2008 from a stock lawsuit. Money is owed not only to individuals. Many organizations and even businesses are on the list.

The money comes from entities like banks, corporations, and insurance companies that are required to hand over money to the government from things like dormant accounts or unclaimed real estate income. New York is constantly trying to return the money to its rightful owners, officials said.
