Disgraced Former NYC Councilman Andy King Files Papers to Run for His Old Bronx Seat

Former City Councilman Andy King, who was expelled from the House in 2020 amid numerous complaints of professional misconduct, may be running for his old seat in the Bronx, Daily News has learned.

King, a Democrat, filed paperwork with the city’s campaign finance board on Wednesday to run this year for the 12th municipal district, which includes Co-op City, Bicester, Williamsbridge and Eastchester.

The documents list King’s old campaign headquarters in Williamsbridge as his mailing address and also list the treasurer, indicating that he is seriously considering campaigning. However, the application also states that he is “unknown” and he reported $0 in his campaign account.

On Thursday, neither King nor his campaign treasurer immediately responded to requests for comment.

Following King’s ouster, the 12th District was represented by Democratic Councilman Kevin Riley. He declined to comment on King’s apparent attempt to return to the Council.

This year, the preliminary elections to the Council will take place in June. The general election will take place in November.

Despite King’s new bid, a Council source suggested that he may not legally be able to run this year due to term limits.

According to the term limit rules in the City Charter, a Council member “who resigns or is removed from office before the expiration of a full term shall be deemed to have held that office for the full term for the purposes of section 1138 of the bylaws. ”

“We believe he is legally term-limited,” the source said. “According to existing rules, he cannot run again until 2025.”

King became the first Council member in modern memory to be kicked out of the room by his own colleagues.

His dismissal on October 5, 2020 came after the Ethics Council committee substantiated allegations that he harassed an employee, received a kickback from another employee, and failed to pay a fine for previous misconduct.

Decisive action came after the Board suspended King for 30 days a few months ago for harassing staff; using Council resources at his stepdaughter’s wedding in the Virgin Islands; and allowing his wife, a municipal union officer, to help run his office for her own benefit, among other charges.

During a debate in the city council chamber prior to his expulsion, King stated that his punishment was akin to “lynching”.

“Why are they attacking me like that?” he said at the time. “I don’t want to be a martyr. I just want to keep serving the people of the 12th district.”
