Despite security concerns, travel agents are seeing a surge in travel during spring break in Mexico.

DALLAS (CBSNewsTexas) – Despite security concerns in Mexico, where four people were abducted, travel agents in north Texas said they continue to see an increase in people traveling for spring break and heading into the summer.

travel agents are seeing a surge in travel during spring break in Mexico and before summer.

People are leaving the country in anticipation of warming.

“Travel is back and better than ever,” said Winner Circle travel agency owner Angel Taylor. “I feel like people are traveling more after the pandemic than before the pandemic.”

Taylor said her clientele has almost tripled. Mexico is one of the most popular destinations.

“I send clients there, it’s one of my top destinations,” Taylor said. “This is one of my favorite places,” said Sidney Chamber, who will soon be heading south of the border.

However, there are concerns following a recent incident involving US citizens. The FBI confirms that four people were abducted after an armed man opened fire on their car in Matamoros, northern Mexico, near the border. Matamoros is a no-travel zone at the federal level.

“Some clients came to me in a panic,” Taylor said. “I reassured them that tourist areas like Cancun, Riviera Maya are safe for tourists, they stay in resorts, they are not close to the border.”

However, the U.S. State Department map shows that the vast majority of Mexico is covered by some form of travel advisory, including the popular northeastern Yucatan Peninsula, home to coveted destinations such as Cancun, Cozumel and Playa del Carmen. – all of them fall under the “serious warning category”.

But for some people who travel, these warnings are not enough to change their plans.

“I don’t have a lot of security issues, like I said, I’ve traveled quite a lot,” Chambers said. “I know I enjoy staying at my resort, erm, the tours I book with reliable companies when it comes down to it. As for when I go to Tulum… there are real tourists, so I stay in these famous places.”

As travelers continue to head to Mexico or elsewhere outside the country, Taylor offered some advice.

“Don’t go to places you don’t know and don’t walk if you’re with a group – stay with your group,” Taylor said.
