Denver Health will receive an accelerated state payment

Local lawmakers are expediting a $5 million payment to Denver Health, which operates a community care hospital in Colorado, according to a Feb. 8 announcement. Denver Post report.

Denver Health, whose flagship is the 555-bed Denver Health Medical Center, which serves about 25 percent of the city’s residents as well as people from outside Denver, is struggling with paying for non-reimbursed care and only has about 80 days of cash on hand. According to the report, the amount of donations provided by the hospital has roughly doubled since 2020 to $120 million in 2022.

While the $5 million payment is likely to be insufficient, other funding sources could include the governor’s office, the report said. Approximately $20 million could come from there in February, said State Senator Rachel Zenzinger, chair of the joint budget committee.

Fitch Ratings affirmed Denver Health at ‘BBB’ on February 7 after the system reported an operating loss of $60.7 million in 2022. The system maintains a close relationship with the city and county, Fitch said at the time.

Colorado Gov. Jared Polis recently clashed with local hospitals over criticism that they are making excessive profits, but a local government report backing Mr. Polis’ claims does acknowledge that Denver Health and some rural hospitals in the state are facing significant challenges.
