Denton Surface streets, parking lots frozen due to ice storm

On Wednesday morning, the manager of the Hilton Garden Inn was in the parking lot pouring melted ice over the ice in an attempt to turn what looked like an ice rink back into a parking lot.

From parking lots to sidewalks to streets, cars and pedestrians moved slowly across the ice sheet, if at all.

“I’m from Jamaica and this is new,” Omar Wiggan said as he stepped carefully across the ice. “I’m cold!”

From room keys as ice scrapers to spade crews, those who ventured outside first tried to clear a path.

“We were supposed to be in Lufkin, Texas yesterday. It didn’t happen,” tour bus driver Randall Koenig said. “We were supposed to be in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma today. That did not happen”.

Koenig drove the actors in the touring musical On Your Feet. On Wednesday, two tour buses slowly made their way through surface streets to reach Interstate 35E North.

“You know, we try,” said head carpenter Jason Duke.

There was steady rain on Wednesday afternoon that is expected to freeze and in some cases again as temperatures drop.
