DEC wants to know who lost a 14-foot python found on the side of a road in New York.

On Valentine’s Day, someone reported seeing a 14-foot snake on the side of the road in Medford, Long Island, New York.

Environment Department police investigating the report found the snake, a reticulated python, curled up in a ball.

Pythons are native to South and Southeast Asia and cannot survive long in low temperatures. After determining that the snake was dead, the officers stretched it to its full length of 14 feet before getting rid of it.

The DEC said it is illegal to keep these snake species as pets in New York City and only those with a dangerous animal license can own them.

The owner of the snake is under investigation.
