Credit card fraud allegations could attract Long Island scammer

After he managed to dodge the consequences of his long list of lies, perhaps Congressman George Santos is finally out of luck. Former associate Gustavo Ribeiro Treglia sent a sworn statement to federal authorities confirming that Santos was in fact the mastermind of the Seattle credit card fraud conspiracy that resulted in Treglia being arrested six years ago and eventually deported to Brazil.

What was most disturbing about Santos’ rise to the top of the mountain of deceit was that he showed the extent to which our electoral process depends on what is essentially a version of the honor system. Despite how egregious the congressman’s behavior was, he didn’t break any laws, and it seemed like he could continue to evade reporters by diving into elevators and nominally representing his district, which actually voted for a different, completely fabricated person than the man , which they got, at least until he was fired from office in 2024.

If Treglia is telling the truth, Santos has indeed violated certain criminal laws and the relevant authorities should accept this gift-wrapped declaration and actively pursue her. Santos flew to Seattle to stand trial in the Tregli case and lied to the judge about working for Goldman Sachs. The US Secret Service and federal prosecutors should be able to find leads such as the warehouse where he allegedly stored credit card skimming materials.

There is no doubt that Santos will claim that he was the victim of a political witch hunt, which is the answer today for MAGA types who want to avoid consequences for their actions. As with any other high-profile case — or any criminal case, for that matter — law enforcement needs to make sure they dot the i’s and cross out the letters if they decide to charge him with it.

Calls for Santos to be expelled from the House for his fabrications raise thorny questions about the possibility of punishment for speaking out. On the other hand, expulsion after a conviction for outright theft is much easier.
