COVID-19 cases up slightly in San Diego County, flu cases down

Cases of COVID-19 have risen slightly over the past week, prompting San Diego County public health officials to once again urge residents to get vaccinated and boostered.

In total, 1,916 cases of COVID-19 have been reported in the county in the past seven days, bringing the total number of cases in the region to 981,076. These cases are up by the 1,755 infections identified in the previous week.

“The best way for people to protect themselves, their loved ones and friends from potentially getting seriously ill or dying from COVID-19 is to continue to get up-to-date immunizations and bivalent booster immunizations,” said Dr. Cameron Kaiser of the District. deputy health officer. “Despite the fact that the number of cases of COVID-19 is well below the historical maximum, the virus is still widespread. And it remains a potentially deadly threat to many people.”

In addition, 14 deaths were recorded, bringing the total death toll across the region to 5,759. Of these, 10 were over 65, nine were vaccinated, and five were not. All 14 had comorbidities.

The number of people hospitalized with COVID-19 in San Diegan increased by five to 247, while the number of those in intensive care units decreased by three to 27.

More than 2.69 million people, or 80.6% of San Diegan residents, received the first batch of one of the approved COVID-19 vaccines. In addition, 572,085 people, or 22.8% of the 2,514,110 eligible San Diegan residents, received the bivalent booster program.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) recommend a bivalent booster shot for all children six months of age and older.

Both vaccination and treatment for COVID-19 are still widely available in San Diego County. COVID-19 primary series vaccines and bivalent boosters, as well as influenza vaccines, are available at local pharmacies, health care providers’ offices, and county immunization sites.

Over the past week, the number of influenza cases has dropped, with 59 cases reported, compared with 77 in the previous seven days. The total number of laboratory-confirmed cases to date has increased to 20,869 – up from 1,549 at the same time last season and 7,852 on average over the previous 5 years in the same week.
