Cornell University suspends frat parties after reported sexual assault, druggings

Cornell University suspended all fraternity parties and social events after four students were reportedly drugged and one was sexually assaulted at off-campus fraternity houses in the past two weeks.

Fraternity-organized social events will not resume “until student leaders and Cornell staff are confident activities can take place responsibly and safely,” according to a letter signed by university president Martha Pollack and vice president Ryan Lombardi.

The Ithaca Police Department (IPD) said the report of sexual assault was made on Sunday, and occurred between 2:30 a.m. and 4:30 a.m. at a residence on the 100 block of Thurston Avenue, according to The Ithaca Voice. IPD is investigating that case.

The four incidents of drugging occurred between Sept. 24 and Nov. 3, according to Cornell police, and the use of Rohypnol is suspected. IPD is aware of those cases, according to The Ithaca Voice, but have not confirmed investigations.

The student-led Interfraternity Council made the suspension decision on Sunday after the Sunday report of sexual assault.

Cornell administration members “strongly condemn” the alleged assaults, according to the letter.
