CNY Brewfest 2023 changes Super Bowl Eve to March Madness

Syracuse, New York. For nearly 25 years, the annual CNY Brewfest could be counted on to have a special place on the calendar: the day before the Super Bowl.

That changed in 2021 when the festival, one of the largest and most popular annual beer events in the region, was canceled due to Covid. It happened again in 2022 when lingering concerns about Covid pushed it into April.

This year’s event also gives you a Super Bowl Eve Pass.

CNY Brewfest 2023 will take place on March 24 (VIP) and March 25 (two regular sessions) at the Horticulture Building at the New York State Fairgrounds.

Whether he will ever return to his traditional Super Bowl weekend, organizer Jason Purdy can’t answer that question.

“We looked at the calendar, talked to the fairgrounds and tried to find a suitable option,” Purdy said, adding that the upcoming school holidays are also a big factor as so many people leave the city. (He also tries to avoid conflicts with basketball games in Syracuse).

This year’s main festival sessions (separate ticket required for each) feature more than 100 breweries, each bottling samples while attendees listen to live music. Food is available for separate purchase. The Friday night VIP session is limited to 30 breweries, but offers a more intimate experience with brewers and special beers.

Like last year, Purdy is limiting attendance at the main sessions so people can move around comfortably and avoid long lines.

The lineup includes breweries from Central New York, other regions of the upstate and New York.

Purdy, also owner of Now & Later Bar and Tipp Hill Bottle Shop, said the local craft beer scene has been undergoing some changes in recent years due to the pandemic and other market factors, but he is confident there are still plenty of options. and new beers to discover.

“I think it’s still dynamic,” he said. “There has been some downsizing (in breweries) but so many retailers and distributors. The market may be more scattered than it was.”
