WELLINGTON (Reuters) – Nominations for New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern close at 9:00 (20:00 GMT) and if only one proposal is put forward, the result is expected on Saturday.
Labor’s chief whip Duncan Webb said in a statement on Friday that nominations close at 9 am and a candidate must have the support of at least 10% of Labor MPs to be nominated.
If there is more than one candidate, elections will be held on Sunday in a caucus – 64 MPs from the Labor Party in Parliament. If a candidate fails to secure two-thirds of the available votes by Thursday, the race for leadership will move to a wider membership.
The winner will become prime minister until the next general election. Ardern, 42, said on Thursday she “no longer has the strength” to continue leading the country and will resign no later than early February and will not seek re-election.
