Can acupressure mats really help with chronic pain?

If you want to reap the benefits of needle-free acupuncture, acupressure mats may be the answer.

“Acupressure is a noninvasive technique that uses physical pressure points to help control pain chemicals in the body,” says Stephanie Bourassa, director of the sports medicine clinical program and head of the movement laboratory at the Hartford HealthCare Bone and Joint Institute.

Acupressure mats, most of which look like yoga mats covered in small plastic spikes, can provide similar results for a lower price in the comfort of your home.

Benefits of acupressure

In acupressure, an experienced practitioner applies manual pressure to specific parts of the body to relieve chronic pain.

“Acupressure has been shown to be effective in treating pain, headaches, sleep disturbances, and gastrointestinal disorders, as well as promoting general relaxation,” says Bourassa.

The right choice of rug

Everyone has specific pain management issues, and choosing the mat that best suits your needs will help you in the long run.

Burassa suggests considering:

  • The size of the spike and the style of the rug will suit you best.
  • The size that best suits the area you will be using it in.

Beginning

Before you begin, it is important to understand how to use an acupressure mat. Burassa offers:

  • Choosing the best surface for your rug, from the bed or sofa to moving the rug to the floor.
  • Start with a soft layer between you and the mat to help get used to the feel of the spikes.
  • Distribute your weight evenly on the mat to avoid injury at certain points.
  • Use the mat at all times and move carefully to best suit your body’s needs.

“Use the mat in small doses to maximize effects by adjusting how it engages and releases trigger points. It’s like trying on new shoes,” Burassa adds.

Results may take time

“In general, we recommend medium to long-term use of acupressure mats. Some people find it difficult to adjust to them. It may take time to relax in some pain relief regimens,” says Bourassa.

If you use the mat too often or you don’t find the relief you need, it may be time to see a pain management specialist.
