Bursitis: there is help to show your best side

Bursitis is an overgrowth of bone or tissue around the joint at the base of the big toe. The thumb may turn towards the second toe, and the tissues around the joint may become swollen and tender.

Wearing tight and narrow shoes can lead to bunions. Bursitis can also develop as a result of the shape of your foot, foot deformity, or a medical condition such as arthritis.

You should see a doctor or doctor who specializes in treating foot conditions (podiatrist or foot orthopedic specialist) if you have:

  • Constant pain in the big toe or foot
  • Visible lump on the joint of the big toe
  • Bursitis causing reduced mobility of the big toe or foot
  • Difficulty finding suitable shoes due to bursitis

Possible complications of bursitis include:

  • Bursitis. This painful condition occurs when the small, fluid-filled pads that cushion the bones near the joints become inflamed.
  • Hammer toe deformity. An abnormal bend that occurs in the middle joint of the toe, usually the toe next to the big toe, can cause pain and pressure.
  • Metatarsalgia. This condition causes pain and swelling in the ball of the foot.
