Brown University Physician to Lead USPSTF as Vice Chair

Michael Silverstein, MD, director of Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, has been appointed Vice Chair of the US Preventive Services Task Force, an expert group that makes evidence-based recommendations on clinical screening, preventive medicines, and counseling services.

Dr. Silverstein is director of the Hassenfeld Institute for Child Health Innovation at Brown University, which aims to reduce health inequities during pregnancy and childhood for Rhode Island families. According to a March 15 press release, he began his medical career as a pediatrician at Boston Medical Center before joining Brown to focus on public health.

Dr. Silverstein was a member of the task force from 2016 to 2020.

“Being a part of the working group has been a professional experience of a lifetime for me and I am thrilled to be back as part of its leadership team,” said Dr. Silverstein. “The Task Force is dedicated to using evidence to improve the health of Americans and address critical health equity issues. I am happy to help guide the work of the task force in a way that maximizes positive impact.”
