Bronx man mortally wounded in neck adores father of four: ‘He was a hardworking family man’

The Bronx father was stabbed to death outside a public housing estate Wednesday morning, police and his heartbroken nephew said.

Derrick Hamlin, 51, got into an altercation with his killer outside the John Adams homes on Tinton Avenue near 152 E Street in Woodstock around 11:40 a.m., police said.

A NYCHA worker cleans the bloodied entrance to President John Adams' home at 680 Tinton Avenue, where a man was fatally stabbed and knocked unconscious on Wednesday, March 1, 2023.

When police arrived at the scene, they found Hamlin with a stab wound to his neck.

Medics rushed him to Lincoln Hospital, but they couldn’t save him.

He lived about half a mile in the same area where the family had gathered on Wednesday evening.

“He was a hardworking family man,” said the man’s nephew Dwayne Hamlin. “He was the one who taught me hard work and responsibility.”

Hamlin had three girls and a boy, the youngest of whom was 11 years old.

“Whenever we had a problem, we said go to Bow — that’s what everyone called him,” said Dwayne Hamlin, 34. “He has always been by our side.”

Victim worked for a law firm in Manhattan doing maintenance work. He also worked as a loader for extra money.

“I want to emphasize that he was a real family man,” said Duane Hamlin, noting that after his uncle had children, he reformed and began to work hard to provide for them.

“He loved his children and was just crazy about his daughter.”

There were no immediate arrests as the police worked to find Hamlin’s killer.

“For something to escalate to this point at 11 a.m.,” said Dwayne Hamlin, trailing off. “It just doesn’t make any sense.”
