Bill suggests raising state and federal dollars for Planned Parenthood and other family planning providers.

The state senator wants to repeal Texas laws that prevent Planned Parenthood and other groups from receiving state and federal funding.

AUSTIN, Texas. Family Planning Supporters Texas Votes, the reproductive health provider’s political committee, showed its support for Senate Bill 1314 at the State Capitol on Monday o CARE No Matter What Act. This will make Planned Parenthood and other recognized family planning providers eligible to receive state and federal dollars again.

“Texans have lost access to life-saving services after Planned Parenthood was removed from federal Medicaid and other major family planning programs, and that number will continue to rise if Governor Abbott gets his way,” Wendy said. Davis of Planned Parenthood Texas Votes. .

State Senator Sarah Eckhardt is the bill’s sponsor and calls the health trajectory for women in the state “appalling.”

“Due to Texas policy, one in four of the 82 women’s clinics closed or eliminated family planning services, and a third of them were family planning centers,” Eckhardt said.

Ongenie Warren is a Houston native who says Planned Parenthood helps her feel “safe, heard and approved.”

“I don’t know where I would go for STI tests, for physical exams, for breast cancer screening, for Pap tests,” Warren said.

Supporters say if the bill passes, more Texans will be able to access contraceptives, cancer screening and STD tests. But not everyone is on board. Texas Right to Life chairman Dr. John Seago said the bill is an attempt to undo what he calls “anti-abortion victories” the state has seen in recent years.

“This bill itself is not about health care; it’s about these healthcare providers and getting them funded again,” Seago said.

It’s an ongoing battle for tens of thousands of Texans.

Several Democratic senators signed in support of the bill, but no Republicans. Senator Eckhardt understands that she will need Republican support to move the proposal forward.
