Big Thaw Begins Around High Five Interchange in Dallas

A large thaw began Thursday around the Dallas High Five, the five-level interchange of US 75 Central Expressway, and the I-635 LBJ Freeway in North Dallas.

Tony Hartzel of the Texas Department of Transportation said the High Five was treated the same as other major Dallas interchanges, which had more serious crash problems on days of freezing weather. The High Five’s drivers were just lucky or more careful to avoid the more serious crashes seen elsewhere, Hartzel said.

The ice there was just as severe, and the neighbors of the High Five were also waiting for a thaw on Thursday.

Some didn’t wait for Mother Nature to clear the driveways, using shovels to help them get back on the road.

In some places, water flowed unhindered into storm drains, while other lanes remained frozen and slippery.

“It’s better, but it’s dangerous because people are getting so confident and accelerating that it’s even more dangerous now,” driver Monica Battison said.

She made sure to de-ice her car before the trip.

Driver Ivan Lomaks said the flying ice could pose a threat to those around him.

“Especially when you first hit him to get off the roof of your car, that’s when he’s most at risk,” Lomax said.

In one office building where workers were clearing a parking lot on Wednesday, it was clear on Thursday, the weather had warmed up as some side streets were covered in ice.

One nearby school didn’t seem to have thawed out by Friday.

The drivers were at Costco next to the High Five, eager to get out and restock after a few days inside.

“We were at home and then we ran out of food, so we have to go and do some shopping,” Battison said.

Customer Jacob Flores said his trip to the store wasn’t all that bad.

“I have chicken breast, Canadian bacon, some bell peppers and socks,” Flores said.

With the exception of eggs, which Costco customers couldn’t find in store earlier this week, Flores said he found most of the items he wanted despite days of difficulty getting to stores.

There was less ice in the parking lot of the store than in many other places nearby.

“You need to come out here and buy, anyway. We must be careful. You have to shop and be careful at the same time,” Lomax said.

Some flyovers and lanes around the High Five remained icy Thursday night as temperatures were expected to drop below freezing again before a final thaw on Friday.
