Bay Area Rep. Barbara Lee tells colleagues she’s running for Senate, a source close to the lawmaker says.

SAN FRANCISCO (CGO) — A source close to East Bay Congresswoman Barbara Lee told ABC7 that she told her fellow Democrats that she was running for Senator Dianna Feinstein.

Lee’s announcement also came a day after Rep. Kathy Porter announced the Senate’s 2024 bid for Feinstein’s seat.

At 89, Feinstein is the oldest person serving in the Senate right now, but she hasn’t officially announced she’ll call it a career after that term ends. However, many expect she will not run for another six-year term next year.

If Feinstein resigned, it would likely spark a crowded fight for the top Senate seat in the nation’s most populous state.

Other potential contenders include Rep. Adam Schiff, Lieutenant Governor Eleni Kunalakis, California Attorney General Rob Bonta, and US Secretary of Health and Human Services Xavier Becerra, a former longtime member of Congress.

Feinstein has filed for re-election in 2024 with the Federal Election Commission but has recently faced criticism over her suitability for the job. She turned down those offers, telling CNN last year that she felt “absolutely” capable of doing her job completely, adding, “I think it’s pretty obvious.”
