Bay Area Grannies Start the Year of the Rabbit with a Lunar New Year Hip Hop Dance and Music Video

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) — A group of dancing grandmothers from the Bay Area kick off the Year of the Rabbit with hip-hop and an important message.

The dance troupe Grant Avenue Follies began operations in San Francisco’s Chinatown in the 1950s. In 2021, ABC7 news anchor Dion Lim reported on their first rap, which was their way of speaking out against attacks on Asian Americans.

This cheeky group of seniors is back just in time for the Lunar New Year with a new song and music video for “That Lunar Cheer”. A group of women in their 60s and 80s dressed in red costumes and adorned with gold jewelry dance and rap about Lunar New Year traditions.

The project involves the non-profit organization AARP and rapper Jason Chu. This message is dedicated to the 50th anniversary of hip-hop and inspires people of all ages.
