At least one person was injured in a shooting at the Castleton Square shopping center.

Indianapolis police are investigating a shooting at the Castleton Square Mall.

Shortly before 4 p.m., officers reported that a man with gunshot wounds was found at the entrance to the mall and was taken to the hospital for treatment. His condition was assessed as stable.

The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department said investigators spoke to several people who may have been involved in the shooting, but declined to name them as suspects.

The mall will be closed throughout the evening.

“We’ll be here for a while trying to piece together what exactly happened,” Officer William Young said.

Anderson’s Pat Gibson was shopping at Macy’s with his wife for a future cruise for the entire five minutes when he saw people start running for the exit, yelling at everyone to get out of the mall.

“I mean, crowds of people just start to flood,” Gibson recalled. Gibson said he left his purchases at the checkout and ran out of the mall with his wife to their car in front of a Kay Jewelers store, where they stopped and watched police collect shell casings.

Elsewhere in the mall parking lot, Chris Lowe and her 10-year-old daughter Julia hugged as snowflakes fell on their Girl Scout cookie cart. Lowe and her daughter were at the Girl Scout booth at Castleton Mall when the shots rang out.

“We heard a few shots and people ran, so we ran away from the shots,” Lowes said.

Lowe and her daughter ran into the shoe store, where they hid in a secure storage area with four other employees and eight mall customers. They stood until it was safe to get out.

“It was terrible,” Lowe said. “Fortunately, we were safe. There were many good, kind people who united.”

There have previously been shootings at the Castleton mall in northern Indianapolis and at least two shootings at the Greenwood Park mall in the south of the city in 2022.
