Armed scammers robbed 13 victims in three New York City boroughs in a frenetic two-hour blitz: “I’ll be out on bail in 24 hours”

A pair of gunmen robbed 13 people in three districts during a wild two-hour crime spree early Tuesday morning — only to wreck their minivan as they were about to raid a fourth district, police said.

One of the suspects boasted that he would soon be back on the streets when he was arrested at the crash site on Tuesday morning.

“In 24 hours I will be released on bail,” he vowed as he was put into a police car in handcuffs, according to Fox 5 News.

His accomplice, believed to be 24, escaped and is still being sought.

The gun, which was brandished during the robbery, was seized from the glove compartment of the minibus.

New York’s bail laws have sparked great controversy since the Democratic-led legislature approved a major overhaul in 2019 that limited pre-trial detention for most nonviolent crimes and required judges to apply only the “least restrictive” measures for ensuring the return of the accused to court.

The robberies began in Queens just before 1 a.m. when robbers drove up in their white Toyota minivan and robbed two women on Alstin Avenue near 104th Street in Corona, making off with two cell phones and a necklace, police said.

The duo soon showed up at the Woodside Motel on Queens Boulevard. near 65th Street, where cash and a mobile phone were taken from two people, police said.

The scammers then traveled to Brooklyn where they apprehended a man at 11th Street and White Avenue in Greenpoint at 1:45 a.m. before returning to Queens where they apprehended six people at an outdoor dining hall near 72nd Street. , and Broadway to Jackson Heights in about 20 minutes, police said.

Their last two robberies were in Manhattan, where they robbed a worker in a food truck outside Washington Square Park at 2:40 a.m. and then snatched a bag of personal belongings from a woman at Seaman Avenue and 204th Street in Inwood. at 3:10 am, the police said.

None of the robbery victims were injured.

Police quickly launched a manhunt, and around 4 a.m., officers in an NYPD helicopter spotted the minivan in the Bronx, where it crashed near Cedar Avenue and 179th Street in University Heights.

Investigators believe the duo were robbing anyone they could find on the street for quick cash and valuables and were planning to continue their fun in the Bronx when they broke up.

Charges against the 34-year-old suspect, who has been taken into custody, are pending.

Gov. Hochul said she wants to change bail reform laws to give judges more leeway to impose bail.

“What we’re talking about now, which is a thoughtful, common sense approach, is that in serious crimes … the judge should have more leeway and be able to consider more factors,” she said Jan. 24.
