Angelo State to hold Flute and Double Reed Day

The ASU Music Program invites local and local high school and junior college students who play flute, oboe, and bassoon to participate.

SAN ANGELO, Texas. The Angelo State University Music Program invites local and local high school and junior college students who play flute, oboe, and bassoon to participate in ASU Flute and Double Reed Day on Sunday, January 29 at Carr Education. – Fine Arts Building (EFA), 2602 Dena Dr.

The free event will run from 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm and will be hosted by Dr. Constance Kelly and Dr. Janelle Ott of the ASU Music Department, as well as guest musicians Dr. Douglas Buckenhus and Dennett Derby McDermott.

The schedule of events includes:

  • Flute, oboe and bassoon master classes
  • Sight-reading in ensemble
  • Lectures and classes
  • Mini-concert with the participation of invited musicians and teachers of ASU

The public is also invited to a mini-concert starting at 5:00 pm at the Eldon Black Concert Hall in the Carr EFA Building.

Then, on Monday, January 30 at 7:00 pm, Bakenhus and McDermott will perform a special joint concert at the Eldon Black Recital Hall, which will also be free and open to the public.

In addition to teaching at ASU, Kelly is director of the San Angelo Community Orchestra and founder and conductor of the Concho Valley Community Flute Choir, according to an ASU press release. Ott has performed with symphony orchestras in Texas, Arkansas, Illinois, Kansas, and Louisiana. They also perform as two-thirds of the ASU Mesquite Trio.

Backenhus is the music director and conductor of the Natchitoches-Northwestern Symphony at Northwestern State University in Louisiana, where he also teaches bassoon and conducting. He has also been music director of the Northeast Texas Symphony since 2002 and has performed as a guest conductor in the region and internationally, including in Honduras and Slovakia. He regularly performs with the Shreveport, Longview, Texarkana, and South Arkansas Symphony Orchestras. He holds music degrees from the University of Texas and Texas A&M-Converse University.

McDermott is a retired flute professor and graduate school coordinator at Northwestern State University, where she taught flute from 1990 to 2022. She currently plays flute with the Austin Baroque Orchestra, which specializes in Renaissance, Baroque and Classical music, and she recently recorded a CD of flute sonatas by the 18th century Czech composer Jiří Karta. She has also performed in the US, as well as Canada, the Czech Republic, England, Honduras, Russia, Slovakia and Spain. She holds musical degrees from Michigan State University, the University of Michigan, and the University of North Texas.
