An upstate school district drew ire for calling a muddy snowman “as diverse as our students.”

An upstate school district has drawn criticism for calling a muddy snowman made by fourth-grade students “diverse.”

“Today’s Fourth Grade CE Playground!” The Coxsackie-Athens Central School District posted the news on Facebook on Tuesday. “This snowman is as diverse as our students!”

This post, which was reported by Middletown radio station WRRV, is no longer online, but screenshots of a dirty three-tiered snowman surrounded by students continue to live on the Internet.

Numerous Facebook users, deeming the photo’s caption to be racially insensitive, reached out to the school district asking for clarification on the first day of Black History Month.

“How about using this as a learning opportunity?” asked one of the commenters. “You know, like in SCHOOL.

Several Facebook users said the school district, located 20 miles south of Albany, was deleting critical responses rather than reviewing them.

The school district addressed the issue on its homepage on Tuesday.

“The word ‘diverse’ was used to describe the fact that each child can build a snowman in their own way, and this diversity of creativity should be celebrated,” he says in an explanation. “When it was commented that this post could be interpreted as a race, the post was removed. We want to apologize and reiterate that this was never meant to cause harm.”

The Coxsackie-Athens Central School District consists of four schools in the Green District, which has a population of approximately 50,000. The school district website is available in English, Simplified Chinese, and Spanish.
