An “extremely dangerous” tornado in Selma, Alabama damages buildings and uproots trees.

SELMA, Alabama. On Thursday, a strong tornado damaged homes and uprooted trees in Alabama as the powerful storm system swept through the south.

The National Weather Service in Birmingham said a “large and extremely dangerous tornado” caused damage while passing through Selma. The Met Office declared a tornado emergency in several counties north of the capital Montgomery as the same storm system moved east.

The weather service said there were numerous reports of damage to trees and structures in Selma.

Several tornado warnings were issued across Alabama, Mississippi and Tennessee Thursday as the storm system moved across the region.

In Kentucky, the National Weather Service in Louisville confirmed that an EF-1 tornado hit Mercer County and said crews were looking into damage in several other counties. There were reports of downed trees, power outages, and other scattered damage from hurricanes that swept across the state.
