American Idol 2023 premiere: what to expect from season 21

NEW YORK — The search for the next American Idol begins anew Sunday night with the premiere of season 21 on ABC.

Superstar judges Luke Bryan, Katy Perry and Lionel Richie are back together for season six. They’ve become like a family, says Perry.

“This is our sixth season. We love our work. We love each other. We have a lot of respect for each other and respect for the concert,” Perry said during an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live.

Emmy Award winner Ryan Seacrest also returned as host of the iconic music competition.

The nationwide search began with American Idol auditions in Las Vegas, Nashville, and New Orleans, with contestants vying for a ticket to a week in Hollywood.

Richie said that what really changed the equation were the face-to-face interviews that take place online before auditions, meaning people come from all over, including cities and towns that Idol couldn’t get to before.

“Which means it’s for a city that we’ve never heard of in Arkansas,” Ritchie said.

And that means there’s more talent in reserve than ever before.

“Every time we start a season we’re like, ‘OK, there’s no more talent left in America because we’ve chosen them all,’ and we’re literally in the middle of filming, and we’re like, ‘Oh my gosh, get ready.’ yourself because it’s the best of the best of the best,” Perry added.

Ahead of the premiere, Idol released a preview video of one of these members, 16-year-old Haven Madison. She grew up on a tour bus with her father, the lead singer of a Christian band. He plays the guitar during her audition. In a bold act, she sang an original song titled “Fifteen”.

After Haven’s performance, the judges were ready to escort her to the recording studio!

“Your songwriting skills are incredible,” said Lionel Richie. “You can be anyone.”

The members include Kiya Moni, who made an emotional return to the Idol stage. Kya auditioned for Season 19 and performed alongside Willie Spence at Hollywood Week. They performed the duet “Stay” by Rihanna and brought all three judges to tears.

Spence, who finished second this season, died in a car accident last October. Inspired by Spence to try again, Moni posted on Instagram that this season’s audition brought her to tears.

The premiere is a mix of gripping stories, funny moments (like when Luke Bryan meets Luke Bryan) and of course some incredible performances from these aspiring singers who hope to be the next idol.

The journey starts Sunday at 8/7c on ABC and airs the next day on Hulu.
