“All right in the world” | Houston non-profit giving new life to unwanted bikes

On Saturday, Recycled Cycles of Texas is hosting their first ever fundraiser and donation event.

HOUSTON. If you have an old bike in your garage or need a bike for yourself or your child, you need to know about the event in Houston on January 21st. Recycled Cycles of Texas takes old bikes, repairs them, then donates them to children and adults who need them – for free!

It hosts its first popup. Called Take 1, Keep 1, Need 1, Take 1, the event is exactly what it sounds like. If you have an old, damaged, or otherwise unused bike, you can return it. Alternatively, if you want a bike but can’t afford it, this is your chance to give your refurbished bike a new life.

“Seeing a kid get away on a bike, I mean there are no words to describe it,” said RCOTX founder Ferrell Surett. “Because if I can give this kid 10 minutes, or if I can give this kid 10 days, or if I can give this kid 10 months of fun on a bike that costs me nothing, then everything is right in the world.”

Surette fell in love with bicycles when he learned how to fix them at the age of 8. As an adult, he worked in bike shops and raced, but about 10 years ago he turned to the repair as a gift. He assembles bikes in any form – sometimes he just fixes them, like filling tires, sometimes he takes them apart for parts that can be used to restore other bikes.

The pop-up event is held on Saturday, January 21 from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm at The Urban Flower Company off the Gulf Freeway.
