The woman fled the kidnappers when they momentarily left her alone in their truck after hours of restraint and threats, Vermont police said.

The next day, authorities arrested Mack Varnum and Nicole Cloutier. The couple are now charged with attempted murder in the first degree, kidnapping, false imprisonment in the first degree, and aggravated domestic violence.

Investigators learned that Varnum and Cloutier picked up the woman on the side of the road near Varnum’s home in Peacham on February 23, police said. According to the police, it was then that she was seized and tied up against her will.

She was treated at Northeast Vermont Regional Hospital and was eventually released.

Varnum and Cloutier were arrested at Varnum’s home “without incident,” police said. A third person was also arrested at home in an unrelated case.

According to police, they are currently in custody without bail and are due to be charged on February 27.
