A stranger raped a woman in the stairwell of an apartment building in Manhattan, the NYPD released footage of the suspect

Police said on Sunday that a 21-year-old woman was followed to a Midtown apartment building by a stranger who then raped her in a stairwell.

The victim was cornered in the elevator of a building near West End Avenue and West 65th Street by an assailant who threatened to kill her at around 1:20 am Saturday, police said.

Police released surveillance footage of the suspect, including video of him taking off his jacket in the pouring rain, throwing it over a fence and walking away.

He forced her out of the elevator and into the stairwell, where he raped her, and then pushed her outside before fleeing, police said.

Medics took the woman to the nearest hospital.

The police describe him as 30 years old, about 5 feet 8 inches and 150 pounds. He was wearing a black jacket, gray sweatshirt and black pants.
