A new law in Arkansas allows an anti-abortion monument to be erected at the State Capitol.

LITTLE ROCK, Arkansas. Arkansas Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders signed into law a new law that would allow a monument to be erected next to the Capitol commemorating the number of abortions performed in Arkansas before it was overturned by the U.S. Supreme Court. Rowe vs Wade.

Sanders’ office said late Friday that the Republican governor has signed a bill that would allow a privately funded “monument to the unborn” to be built on the Capitol grounds. The bill, approved by lawmakers last week, would require the Secretary of State to authorize and arrange for the monument to be erected.

It also requires the Capitol Commission on Arts and Territory to oversee the selection of the artist and the design of the monument, with input from anti-abortion groups.

Arkansas passed a 2019 law banning nearly all abortions that went into effect last year when the U.S. Supreme Court overturned the 1973 law. Caviar solution. The Arkansas ban only allows abortions to save the mother’s life in a medical emergency.

In 2018, Tennessee legislators approved legislation allowing a similar privately funded monument to be built on the Capitol grounds. The monument has not yet been erected.

The Arkansas proposal met with opposition from some anti-abortion Republicans, who said it was counterproductive, and Democrats, who said the monument proposal was divisive.
