A murdered man was once hailed as a hero for trying to stop his buddies from leaving a cart that maimed a New York philanthropist: ‘Look what happened to him now’ (EXCLUSIVE)

The 25-year-old man shot to death on a Bronx street was once a teenage hero who was lauded for his futile attempt to stop two friends from pushing a shopping cart off a garage — a reckless act that nearly killed a philanthropist who bought Halloween candy for less fortunate children .

Achilles Baskin was shot and killed near Bathgate Avenue and E. 183rd Street in Belmont on Sunday afternoon, police said.

His death stunned Marion Hedges, who suffered severe brain damage on Halloween 2011 despite the best efforts of Baskin, who tried in vain to stop two friends from pushing a cart off the third floor of a garage at the East River Plaza Center. .

“He was trying to make the right decision,” a still grateful Hedges told the Daily News on Monday. “He had to run because he couldn’t stop them. He had an idea how to do the right thing… He tried. And sadly look at what happened to him now.

Officers arriving at 1:24 p.m. for emergency services found that Baskin had been shot in the head. Doctors rushed him to St. Barnabas’s hospital, but they could not save him. There were no arrests.

“It’s terrible, my heart is really breaking,” Hedges said. “It’s really hard that he was involved in a very sticky situation years ago and he tried to prevent it.”

Hedges stood outside the Target with her son Dayton, 3, and likely would have died had it not been for the doctor who was nearby doing CPR. Her son was not hurt.

“I was technically dead on the sidewalk,” she said on Monday. “I lost a lot of gray cells due to lack of oxygen. I had to re-learn everything. Walk again, eat again. I couldn’t read. I still have double vision. I still have a lot of problems. It’s been a long journey. I walk with a cane.”

“I refuse to say no,” she said of her remarkable recovery. “This is the key to life.”

Two 12-year-old boys were arrested and later pleaded guilty to assault, one of whom was sentenced to 18 months in a juvenile detention center and the other to 16 months in a boarding school.

A few months later, a video surfaced showing Baskin refusing to go along with a sick joke and then trying to stop his buddies.

For his efforts, Baskin was praised by Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who said the teen “did something that I hope you or I would have the guts to do.”

But on the streets, they thought differently: Baskin’s mother had to move her family because of death threats from people who saw a snitch in a teenager.

But Hedges said that Haskins was “really trying to make a difference.”

“He never had the opportunity to live a fulfilling life,” she said of his death. “It is very sad.”

Baskins’ sister, Tiarra Baskins, remembered his heroism on Monday.

“My brother tried to save the lady,” she said. “He is our hero to this day.”

“He was cute. Always protective. He was our brother. He protected us,” she added. “He lived with his family. He and his cousins lived together. He was a very decent boy, with a very big heart. A very generous person. Really crazy. I hope they find who did this to him. He always did the right thing.”

Gaskin’s family is furious over his death.

“He came from a loving home. He is a cutie whose life was taken by a coward, said Baskin’s mother.

It is not yet clear why Baskin was shot, but police are looking into any connection to his arrest in December for attempted murder, police sources said.

Records show that Baskin was also charged with robbery and possession of weapons. He was released on bail and is due back in court on April 20. He had other previous arrests, including marijuana sales, assault and fare evasion, the sources said. His family said Baskin worked in security and maintenance.

Family members believe that Baskin got into a fight with another man and beat him. That other man came back with a gun and killed Baskin.

“My brother beat him. [The killer] decided he wanted to take a gun and shoot my brother,” said Michelle, another sister of the victim.

Hedges recently founded the charity Sweet Returns to help kids make the right choices in their lives. Just last week, she was honored by the junior league for her volunteer work.

“I feel like a new life has been given to me,” she said of her life after her near death.

In 2018, a jury awarded her and her family $45 million after she sued the mall and its security company for not doing enough to keep shoppers safe.
