Dan Berger discusses his new book, Staying Free: A Long History of Black Power Through the Journey of One Family, with one of its heroes, Michael Simmons. This is a new Black Liberation story told through the intertwining of two grassroots organizers.

The Black Power movement, often associated with its cult representatives, drew much of its energy from the work of people whose stories were never told. Staying Free tells the story of two inconspicuous Black Power activists who dedicated their lives to fighting for freedom.

Zohara Simmons and Michael Simmons fell in love while organizing tenants and workers in the South. Their commitment to each other and to social change led them on a multi-year journey that took them first across the country and then around the world. Focusing on their lives, historian Dan Berger shows how Black Power brought together the local and the global across organizations and generations.

Based on hundreds of hours of interviews, Remaining Free is a touching and intimate portrait of two people trying to make their lives work by working to make the world a better place.
