A backstage tour of ISD’s Dallas production studio designed to broaden students’ horizons

It was light, camera, action for Dallas Independent School District students who took a tour of the district’s production studios at Dallas ISD headquarters in Dallas.

“This is our studio where all the magic happens,” the instructor told the Montessori third graders in Onesimo Hernandez with wide eyes.

“Wow!” exclaimed third grader Maria Villarreal.

The students took turns standing in front of and behind the cameras in the studio. They also learned about editing, lighting and sound production.

“I thought it was easy when we watched the video, but right now it seems very difficult. For example, this camera has a lot of buttons,” Villarreal said. “It seems really cool, like being a photographer or looking at cameras and filming people.”

“I didn’t want to leave the room, I love it so much,” said 3rd grade student Kerry Ransone in the recording room. “I want to do this and then I want to edit because you can add fun sounds!”

The students learned production stories that have a beginning, a middle, and an end… just like the books they read in class. So they applied the core curriculum, just in a different way.

“Well, I like it because it shows them a different point of view,” said teacher Juan Jimenez. “We prepare students for college, so I hope that here they will learn how to prepare for college, study hard and get a good job.”

The goal was to open up opportunities for their future careers.
