79-year-old veterinarian says homeless woman kicked him out of his home in Tombol and emptied his bank accounts

Joe Whitten had no intention of buying cars, emptying his bank accounts, and leaving his home in Tomball. But after helping a woman in need, that’s exactly what happened.

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas. The 79-year-old disabled veteran said the people he was trying to help scammed him of thousands of dollars.

Now his house is destroyed and his reputation is undermined. It’s so bad, he had to move.

His neighbors are fed up with what’s going on and they too have called the police to find out what’s going on at the Tomball house that Roma “Joe” Whitten called home.

“I regretted a thousand times that I never helped them, but I did,” Witten said.

He said that it all started with a homeless woman whom he decided to help.

“But you cannot help a thief and a liar,” he said.

He said that after she moved into his house, his car was stolen and she disappeared. Eventually, she reappeared at Witten’s house. This time she was with a man and asked for help again. A few months later another woman came to the house.

“I said, ‘I’ll feed you and give you a place to sleep.’ But I didn’t want it to be forever,” Witten said.

He said his bank account was empty and people were refusing to leave. Whitten said he gave up the house and wanted to sell it.

Whitten said one of the women even claimed to have married him.

“She said, ‘Well, I’ve lived here for eight months, so we’re married.’ I said, “You’re crazy, you lived in that room, and I lived there in my room,” he said.

While KHOU 11 News reporter Grace White was writing this story on Wednesday, neighbors showed her photos of the police being called to the house earlier in the week.

“There’s a lot of activity from people we don’t recognize in and out of the house at any time of the day or night,” neighbor Jenna Cordell said.

Constable Mark Herman said one of the women living in the house was arrested on charges of unrelated theft.

When White walked up to the house and knocked on the door, someone looked in the window, but no one opened the door.

Two law enforcement agencies – the Harris County Sheriff’s Office and the Harris County 4 Constable’s Office – said they were investigating. The Texas Department of Family and Welfare is also looking into Witten’s situation.
