$400 million Hawaii hospital renovation plan moves forward

Plans for a $400 million renovation project for the Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital at Kapaa in Hawaii have moved forward as hospital administrators work to come up with a plan by the end of the year. Civic Rhythm of Honolulu reported Jan 13.

Funding for the project will primarily come from the county and the state over a period of 20 to 30 years. The proposed renovation of the 34-acre campus includes rental housing, a public library, a preschool, commercial space, and open space.

The lease and commercial space will help create new revenue streams for Hawaii Health Systems Corp., the government agency that runs the hospital.

The Samuel Mahelona Memorial was originally built in 1917 as a tuberculosis hospital and has now been repurposed as a long-term care and behavioral health hospital.
