2023 Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo closes but remains open during storm

The Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo remained open throughout the week due to winter rainfall and sleet.

Matt Brockman, a spokesman for the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo, said 970,000 people had attended as of Tuesday. The exchange show usually attracts more than 1 million people a year.

“We have been doing this for 126 years. So, parts of it… we got it pretty good. One of them is fighting cold weather,” Brockman said.

He said protocols are taken when bad weather is expected to ensure the safety of animals and people. Clearing walkways is among the top priorities, Brockman said.

Keith Houchin, owner of Texas Skillet, worked for 21 years as a stock show and rodeo salesman in Fort Worth.

“In the cold weather it was restless. Our queues are freezing, so we carry water. The girls are freezing in front, but they are in a good mood. They are doing a good job,” Houchin said. “It is to be expected that at some point during the rodeo we will have snow and ice. We always do that.”

On Monday they were closed, but since then they have been open every day.

“These people expect us to be here. They are here. They got a lot on the line. They’ve been working on this show all year, showing their pigs and bulls and everything. They support us and we are here to support them,” Houchin said.

Rodney Lambert of Fort Worth and friends attend the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo every year. They had been trying to come since Monday, but because of the weather, they didn’t manage to get out until Thursday.

“Everyone is happy to be back. I like that there are vendors here. I hate this weather that cut some traffic like carnival guys driving all the way,” Lambert said. “I don’t care about the weather. It’s just good to be out.”

The first day of the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo was Jan. 13, and Brockman said they expect the 2023 show to end successfully.

“Mother nature will cooperate. I can see the sunlight breaking through there. Transition to tomorrow [Friday] and Saturday, sunny skies and I expect a lot of happy faces here enjoying the show,” he said.

The last day of the 2023 show is Saturday.
