2 more brands of eye drops recalled due to risk of injury and vision problems

WASHINGTON. U.S. health officials are warning consumers of two more eye drop recalls due to contamination risks that can lead to vision problems and serious injury.

The announcements follow last month’s recall of eye drops made in India that have been linked to an outbreak of drug-resistant infections. One person died and at least five others had permanent vision loss.

There is no indication that the latest reviews are related to these products.

The Food and Drug Administration issued separate recall notices for some of the eye drops distributed by Pharmedica and Apotex after the companies said they were voluntarily withdrawing several batches of their products from the market. Both companies said the recall was done in consultation with the FDA.

On Friday, Pharmedica said it was recalling two batches of Purely Soothing 15% MSM Drops due to issues “that could lead to blindness.” The over-the-counter drops are designed to treat eye irritation. The Phoenix-based company said consumers should immediately stop using the drops and return them to where they were purchased.

According to the company, the recall affects about 2,900 bottles. The drops are made in Arizona.

Last week, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a separate notice from Apotex recalling six batches of prescription eye drops used to treat a form of glaucoma. The company said it launched the recall after it found cracks in several bottle caps.

The drops are distributed as an ophthalmic solution of brimonidine tartrate. 0.15% and were sold between April and February last year.

Apotex said in an email that the eye drops were manufactured in Canada. The company has not received any reports of injuries related to falls.
