2 Michigan hospitals to raise nurses’ pay by at least 16%

Members of the Michigan Nursing Association signed contracts with McLaren Central Hospital in Mount Pleasant and MyMichigan Medical Center Alma.

McLaren Central nurses voted February 22 to approve a new three-year contract, according to a union press release. The MyMichigan Alma Nurses approved their agreement on February 16th.

The deals, which collectively cover about 250 nurses, came after nurses authorized strikes at both facilities.

Each contract has different specific provisions, but they protect and expand the contractual staffing language; provide competitive wages for hiring and retaining RNs; and include restrictions on mandatory overtime, the union said. Nurses at McLaren Central will receive a 16 percent pay increase over three years, excluding steps. MyMichigan Medical Center Alma nurses will receive an additional salary adjustment of an average of 5 percent in the first year of their new contract, 3.75 percent in the second year, and 3.25 percent in the third. This means these nurses will also receive at least a 16 percent pay increase over three years, with additional raises by 2022.

In a union press release, Shenan Sheenabarger, RN, president of the local Michigan Nursing Association’s negotiation department at MyMichigan Alma, touted the agreement as an agreement with “significant improvements that will benefit our patients and our community.” We sincerely hope this will make a difference for Alma in the long run.”

Jessica Harradine, RN, president of local Michigan Nursing Association negotiation at McLaren Central, added that the contract “shows what nurses can achieve if we stay strong and willing to fight for what is right. We will continue to organize together as a union to make sure McLaren honors our ratified agreement and puts patients before profit.”

Hospital leaders also praised the agreements.

“We highly value our employees, our relationship with them and the excellent care they provide to our patients. … We have found common ground with our nurses to reach an agreement that is good for our nurses and the medical center,” Marita. Hattem-Schiffman, president of the Central Region with MyMichigan Medical Centers in Alma, Claire and Mount Pleasant, said in a statement released with Becker. “At MyMichigan Health, safe staffing, workplace safety, and competitive pay have always been and will continue to be priorities.
