1,600 doctors in New York, California petition to form unions

This month, physicians in the New York City Health System and the California Health System filed petitions with the National Labor Relations Board to form a union with the Union of American Physicians and Dentists.

A total of 1,600 physicians from Loma Linda Health University (California) and the University at Buffalo (New York) say their ability to provide quality care suffers from burnout caused by poor working conditions, low wages, overburden and unmet needs in the field of mental health. This is stated in the UAPD report dated February 24.

“How can you expect quality care when these two health systems don’t care about their own providers,” said Stuart Bussey, MD, union president. “This has to change.”

About 800 doctors in each system expressed similar concerns. According to the report, both have come under intense pressure in the midst of the pandemic, and the number of patients in the emergency room continues to rise. Physicians say health systems continue to place additional demands on them as they work under difficult conditions.

“Loma Linda Healthcare University respects the rights and opinions of all members of our team, including medical residents and fellows who may want the union to be represented, and those who don’t,” a spokesperson for the system said. Becker. “We are committed to listening to and protecting our residents as we continue to provide a world-class educational experience that will prepare them for the next steps in their careers.”

This was announced by a representative of the School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at Jacobs University. Buffalo News that he “continues to work with our interns to provide them with a first-class learning environment and fair and competitive remuneration.”

Union activism has increased among doctors and nurses throughout the pandemic as they seek to increase hospital investment in working conditions, staff and other resources to support patient care. In the meantime, hospitals and health systems continue to strengthen their commitment to quality health care during a challenging healthcare period.
