15-year-old girl arrested for murder over burning the Bronx

A 15-year-old girl is accused of starting a deadly fire at a boarding house in the Bronx, which killed a man and injured two.

According to police, the girl had an argument with someone who lived in a rooming house, but not with a man who died in a fire. Police sources describe the suspect as a chronic fugitive who lives in Canandaigua, a small town near Rochester.

On Sunday, police identified the victim as 27-year-old Abdukarim Sakolli.

The suspect was arrested on Saturday in Midtown. She is charged with murder, assault, arson, reckless endangerment and criminal disorderly conduct in connection with the January 29 bombing. The NYPD is not releasing her name because she is underage.

Firefighters respond to an arson attack on Evergreen Avenue in the Bronx January 29.

The teen was captured on CCTV footage entering an illegally converted bunkhouse on Evergreen Avenue off Westchester Avenue in Soundview.

She had a bottle in her hand when she entered, but left the building without it around 1:55 p.m., CCTV footage shows. Investigators believe she used the accelerator to ignite the flames that engulfed the two-story home.

Police said residents of the building spotted her in Midtown and contacted the police.

The blaze spread to a nearby building before more than 100 firefighters were able to put it out. Two men aged 30 and 32 were burned and inhaled smoke, but they managed to get out of the burning house.

Neighbors described the dilapidated building as a den infested with rats.

According to the records, no one was supposed to be in the house. In 2018, the city’s building department issued a full release order. Instead, according to the documents, it operated as an illegal overnight stay.
