10 Humboldt penguins arrive at Houston Zoo ahead of Galapagos exhibit

Ten Humboldt penguins have arrived safely at the Houston Zoo, which will provide them with a permanent home at the new Galapagos Islands exhibit, which opens April 7.

“Penguins can’t really fly, but last month two Humboldt penguins took to the friendly skies on a flight from Seattle to Houston, accompanied by the zoo’s animal care team,” the zoo wrote. in the ad. “They joined some of the zoo’s new colony, including six other Humboldt penguins who went on an epic journey, covering 1,800 miles in a few days, and two more who arrived very recently.”

The announcement says the penguin colony will live in a climate-controlled environment away from mosquitoes that can transmit avian malaria.

Galapagos penguins are the most endangered species in the world, with an estimated population of less than 2,000, according to the Houston Zoo. For this reason, the closely related Humboldt penguins represent them in the zoo’s new habitat.

Access to the new exhibition is included in the general admission ticket. Online booking is required for those who are not members of the zoo. For more information or to buy a ticket, visit HoustonZoo.org.
